Will any flea/tick medication get rid of ear mites in cats?
I have a friend who's cat has ear mites and he refuses to take her to the vet. I just took my new kitten to the vet to get rid of her ear mites that she contracted from the shelter I adopted her from and they used a medication called Revolution, which I know is a flea/tick medication, but I'm not sure if it specializes in ridding of ear mites too. I have a flea/tick medication on hand called "PurrScriptions Plus" that I was thinking of giving my friend in hopes of ridding of his cat's ear mites. Does anyone know if this medication will work to rid of ear mites? I just feel so terrible for this cat. It has been suffering for about 6 months now and I'm afraid she might develop further complications if this isn't taken care of. If the "PurrScriptions" won't work, does anyone know of any other pet store or home remedies that can be used?
Revolution is one of the best preventative medications you can use - it treats for fleas, mosquitoes (so is a heartworm preventative), worms (other than tapeworm), mites, and ear mites. Very few others work the same way. Over the counter flea medications can contain ingredients that can cause seizures and death in cats, so you may not be doing your friend a favor by giving what you have to her. If she won't take the poor cat to the vet for a simple case of ear mites,
Ear mites make a cat miserable. If your friend won't take the cat to the vet, tell her to get some mineral oil and an eyedropper. Put a couple drops in the cat's ears and massage it into the ear canal. Repeat every day for 14 days. It will smother the mites. It does work - not as well as the stuff from the vet, but it will provide relieve for the poor cat.
