What is the ultimate PC anti-virus program?

Everybody has one of those days when they encounter the "dark side" of the Internet - infected by spyware, malware, and all sorts of "wares" that it gets really annoying to try and remove them all one by one. So the question is, what defenses are you using against these threats? What is your recommended PC anti-virus program, preferably one that is able to stop these pests in their tracks! And why?
