6 lb Toy Poodle took Atopica, now blind and sick?
I have a 9 1/2 yr old toy poodle that has persistent ear infections. I took her to the vet again on Friday. He put her on Atopica, and said that she's allergic to something in her environment. Within 45 mins of giving her the drug, we were off to the Emergency Vet Clinic because it actually sedated her. She was a limp noodle. The vet said to watch her but if nothing else occurred she would be fine in 24 hours. Since this time, I've noticed that she had a decreased appetite, shaking, and now her eye sight is diminished. My girl can't even see the ball when I throw it or when I put food in front of her. If I try to hand her a piece of cheese or instance, she'll just back up. She cannot see me! Has anyone heard of such a reaction to Atopica??? The only other thing she has had in the past week has been the topical K9 Advantix. My vet has no answers and neither does the 2nd vet. No one knows what's going on. Friday - here eyes were fine!! And she just got her appetite back today!
atopica is basically cyclosporine and no side effects cause blindness ... your dog must have had an allergic reaction to the allergy medication, as crazy as that sounds ... and to be honest, atopica is not recommended for little dogs, the cut off is 4 pounds but your dog is only 2 pounds more ... decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, all could be because of the drug, but i am not sure about the eye problem, you might want to ask the vet if it is because of the size of your dog and the drug ... as much as it sucks you might want to try a different vet ... call and tell them the seriousness of the problem and ask if they can help because you don't want to waste money on a vet who will do nothing ... i really hope your dog gets her sight back
