Are there alternatives to Proin for spay incontinence in dogs?
My 3-year-old black miniature poodle was peeing on the bed at night, which was so unlike her. After testing for infection, the vet diagnosed 'spay incontinence,' and put her on Proin -- basically a dangerous diet drug (Dexatrim) banned for human use by the FDA -- for the rest of her life, and it has done the trick. At the maximum dosage of PPA, she doesn't pee when she's in a deep sleep. Unfortunately, it's a tough drug, and while it's okay to use in an old dog who might have three years to live, my dog has at least a decade to go -- a long time on this medication. After all, the drug can raised blood pressure and cause strokes -- everything it did to humans it can do to dogs. But is there a rational, useful alternative? Some people say compounded estrogen is no better and much more expensive. It's not that I want to turn my dog into a herbal remedy guinea pig, but nor do I want her to get a stroke in a few years.
