Rescuing stray dogs 20 characters?
I've seen two questions today about how someone rescued a stray dog. Nothing was said about trying to find the owner, calling the police, etc. Do people not realize you are SUPPOSED to call Animal Control or whatever Police when you find a stray animal?
So much BAD advice was given, and many WRONG assumptions made about the owners. Many assumed the dog was abused and that's why it got away, dumped, etc. Never mind the fact that it may have seen a rabbit, got loose to chase it, and then got lost.
I've called animal control about three dogs(different situations) that were lost. All were returned within a day or so to their rightful owners. All were well cared for.
Naysay, that's fine how you do it as well. Either way is fine, so long as everything possible is being done to return the dog to their rightful owner.
In the 5 years I've lived here I have "found" 7 "stray" dogs ... these dogs don't just cross my path, I swear they deliberately fall from the sky into my yard or in front of my car.
You are right ... a LOT of people don't know that they are supposed to report a found animal to animal control.
But what I find even MORE disturbing is that (from my experience), apparently people who have LOST their animals don't know to check with animal control, the county pound, or even the police. Most dog owners where I live don't bother to have their dogs licensed, microchipped ... or even wear a simple ID tag.
Of the 7 I found, I was able to find the owners for 3 of them. None, NOT ONE of these dogs was wearing any tags and ONLY ONE was even wearing a collar. NONE of them were chipped (and YES I did have my vet scan all of them).
I do my absolute best to find the owner(s). The first thing I do is call animal control and the police (in my town and in several nearby towns) and the county sheriff (yeah, ALL those numbers are on my speed-dial) to report the found animal ... I give a description of the dog, my name and phone number, all that. I post on Craigslist. I print flyers and put them up EVERYWHERE someone who has lost a dog might think to look.
Turning a dog in to the pound is something I do as a last resort, if I have exhausted all options to find the owner myself. I have taken 4 dogs to the pound ... NEVER has an owner come forward to claim his/her dog. That is beyond sad ... all were very nice dogs.
Happily, 3 were adopted out and I took the 4th. My conscience is clear but I'm sure there are many dogs and owners who never find each other simply because a "found" dog isn't reported to the authorities or the owner doesn't know the proper procedure for recovering a lost dog.
I do agree with you about the bad advice ... some people here seem to feel it's "finders, keepers" or, if you find a dog, it's yours to do whatever you please with. My dogs are chipped, licensed, and ID'd out the butt and I STILL worry that one or all might get loose or lost. I only HOPE that someone who might find one of my dogs would have the sense to call ME or my vet or Home Again or animal control or the police or ... SOMEONE!
